Challenges of mentoring

Peer-mentors are made and not born. It is usually a process when one becomes a seasoned peer-mentor. The original intent of SAM-buddy program has been to provide an opportunity to most students to become peer-mentors as we believe, they already have a lot of personal experiences and developed skills to live and prosper in a different social, cultural and academic environment.

You are welcome to set up appointment with the coordinator of the program in person to sort out issues, getting supervision and support for your work. You can also e-mail your given concern and get suggestions within a few hours in writings.

Challenges traditionally may include:
- Time management issues
- Feeling underutilized/overutalized
- Misunderstanding of roles
- Not getting positive feedback
- Overstepping boundaries
- Balancing academics with peer-mentoring
- Learning how to show emotions in appropriate ways
- Managing conflict situations
