Mental framing for mentors - a deeper understanding of week #8

« Back to week #8 main page

Ending of the mentoring relationship often presents a challenge to the individuals involved in the mentoring process. Hence, it is important to draw close attention to this (so called closure phase) – and plan ahead. For some it is a relatively easy process (to bring a professional support service to an end at either side) for others it may require more preparation and a more sensitive apporach, thus we recommend the followings steps for you.

Talking about the the future (after the program ends)
Peer-to-peer mentoring program officially ends after the 8th week. Agreeing an end date on the personal level with your mentoree may be a good idea. Keep in mind just because your role as a mentor ends, your relationship to your mentoree as a fellow (lower year) student does not have to. It can transform into friendships as well. If it becomes less, it’s important to try not to take this personally. Towards the end of the time you agreed – You could remind your mentoree that the end is closing up.

Before the final meeting
Look over the SAM-buddy online evaluation form. Think about how your mentoree has changed over the course of eight weeks – Tell him/her what you have noticed. For example, if he/she become better at problem solving or appears to be better adjusted. It can help your mentoree consider what it was that caused him/her to change.

During the final meeting
Revisit your mentoree’s goals – Talk about what has been achieved and how they got there. Talk about the future – Discuss what else your mentoree may have learnt though the mentoring process. It’s a good idea to consider whether you’ll keep in touch and how. Please, reflect on your work together – Ask your mentoree what they found useful about the mentoring and what could have been different. You can use this information to help with your own career and any future mentoring relationships. Please, ask him/her to fill out the adjustment questionare and program evaluation sheets online so we have his/her feedback as well.
