Second week activities

Thanks for taking part in this valuable service and for being a peer-mentor for your appointed first year fellow student. Your insights and advice are indeed transformative for your mentee. During the second week we kindly ask you to set up a meeting with your buddy and visit the following topics with him/her.

This week we ask you to take the opportunity and talk about social unwritten school rules, and official polices/regulations in general. It is common experiences of newcomers upon arrival to a new social micro-climate that more familiar they are with the local norms/expectations, the more secure they feel about their own adjustment. Thus we encourage you to approach the topic via exploring what he/she knows already about the Uni policies.

Four tasks to do this week:
1.) school rules & regulations - please discuss the topic of the proper Uni behavior and the ethical guidelines and norms in general. (safety & security rules, bullying policy, honor code relating to cheating & plagiarism, or keeping dogs on-campus etc.) Click here to access Resource library - university citizen sub-site here for norms and school policies. Please, do mention that all students are titled to see the on-campus mental health counselor free of charge who can help to arrange off campus help if needed. Click the link here to open the brochure for counseling service. Show your buddy where he/she finds policies on the Univet website to learn more about them. Feel free to share your own experiences with your mentoree in regard to rules and regulations during the meeting.

2.) Meanwhile, make sure to get your mentee to be more familiar with unwritten social rules: dress code, before and after class procedures, school and professors, or behavior codes.

3.) Open up a discussion for any questions that may be an immediate concern for your mentee.

4.) Invite your mentee for this week's special (members' only) fun team building event (Sept 18th, Friday) between 6:30 pm and 9 pm, at the AULA organized by the office of peer-mentoring program. Although mentees have already received an invitation for the event by the office of mentoring program in an e-mail it is nice to extend invitation in person as well, also to verify the date and time, and (if you have been in one before, talk about your experience) You may offer him/her to arrive together to the event or meet him/her right before the event. Food and drinks will be provided to make the event more pleasant.

Fun activity ideas for the week:
1.) Think of your 3 most profound positive/negative impressions of your own experience in Hungary upon your arrival a few years ago, during your weekly meeting ask your mentoree to share his/her 3 positive/negative impressions up to this point. Compare & contrast them together in a delightful way.
2.) Take a short visit to the on-campus anatomy museum or show your mentee something about campus that perhaps is not obvious to newbees (and usually upper year students know about the campus.)

Mental framing for mentors - improving skills as a mentor.
